Weekly Waste Wisdom!

Did you know the global Zero Waste movement was started in Berkeley?

The modern concept of zero waste began in the 1980s with the concept of “Total Recycling,” a term coined by Daniel Knapp, the creator of Urban Ore (the legendary recycling center in Berkeley!) He gave presentations around the world which influenced cities and other organizations to create zero waste plans.

The bay area is at the forefront of Zero Waste in many ways. San Francisco was the first city in North America to establish a large scale composting program & ban single use plastic bags. It achieved record-breaking 80% diversion rate in 2010.

Implementing Zero Waste successfully on a campus or city level MAKES A DIFFERENCE and there’s no better to place to make it happen than here in Berkeley!
